On Thursday, October 1, 2026, we invite you to Ubuntu Day 2026 at Gleis 21 in Vienna’s 10th district — an evening dedicated to transcultural collaboration, sustainable architecture, and the power of building together.
The Vision Behind City of Ubuntu
The evening begins with a warm welcome and an introduction to City of Ubuntu. Founder Jean de Dieu Tagne will share the vision behind the association, its background, and its activities — and explain what drives us to create spaces for meaningful collaboration across cultures and continents.
He will also introduce the context of our upcoming building project in Cameroon: Where did the idea come from? What are we hoping to achieve? And why does this project matter?
Together, we will look beyond the building itself — towards a vision of cooperation in which knowledge, resources, and ideas are shared on equal footing.
Building for Tomorrow
City of Ubuntu-Co-Founders and Architects Philipp Broinger and Herwig Ferch of Symbios Architektur will present their approach to an „Ubuntu building“ – a modular and environmentally conscious construction where people can meet, learn and share. Their work explores how architecture can make better use of resources while contributing to the principles of a circular economy and facilitating encounters.
What happens when sustainable design meets local materials, local knowledge, and international collaboration? This evening offers a chance to explore that question from both an architectural and a social perspective.
Also, find out what all of this has to do with our location Gleis 21.
What Does “Equal Footing” Really Mean?
International cooperation sounds inspiring — but what does equality actually look like when people from different professional, cultural, and geographical backgrounds come together?
Architectural researcher Marlene Wagner will share insights from the real-world dynamics of European-African collaboration, highlighting both the challenges and the opportunities that emerge when different forms of expertise meet.
Expect perspectives that challenge familiar assumptions and open up new ways of thinking about architecture, development, and collaboration.
Let’s Talk
The evening will culminate in an interactive panel discussion and audience Q&A. Together, we will explore what becomes possible when local building materials, international expertise, and cross-cultural learning are brought into the same conversation.
And this is where we need you.
Whether you work in architecture, study design, represent an NGO, are involved in sustainability, or simply want to understand how meaningful global collaboration can work in practice — your questions and perspectives are part of the conversation.
Stay, Connect & Experience Ubuntu
After the talks, the evening continues with a relaxed networking session and snacks.
Take the opportunity to meet the speakers, connect with other participants, exchange ideas, and continue the conversations that started on stage. Because Ubuntu is not just an idea to discuss — it is something to experience together.
Come curious. Leave inspired.
